PrideFest 2008

The Center presents PrideFest, the annual parade and celebration commemorating the launch of the modern GLBT movement for civil rights, on June 21 and June 22, Saturday and Sunday, in Denver’s Civic Center Park.

For everyone’s enjoyment, Sophie B. Hawkins will be headlining the Coors Main Stage on Saturday at 3 p.m. Her 90-minute performance is a show not to be missed. Festival goers can dance the day away in the Stoli Dance Area, featuring guest DJ’s. Also, new to PrideFest this year is the addition of the Latin Stage. Located at the corner of Colfax & Bannock, Denver’s own El Potrero will be providing exciting entertainment.

Coors Brewing Company is the presenting sponsor of Denver’s PrideFest, which draws more than 210,000 celebrants. It is one of the largest GLBT Pride celebrations in the country, the largest in the Rocky Mountain West and one of the largest events in Downtown Denver.

Saturday is Family Day at PrideFest

As PrideFest Denver enters its third year as a two-day festival, it continues to cultivate a family friendly environment.

Each year the Family Interactive Area grows in programming, interest, and participation. Family Field Day will be held on Saturday June 21 at the corner of 14th & Broadway. It will kick off with the WaMu Kids Parade, featuring bikes and trikes hand decorated by the tykes themselves. The parade will be moving to the sound of the Mile High Freedom Band. Families are welcome to arrive at 11am to start decorating. The parade will kick off at 12:00pm at the Coors Main Stage.

At the PrideFest Family Interactive Area, imaginations soar while visiting kid and parent friendly booths, including the WaMu Imagination Station, the Children’s Museum of Denver, and the Raptor Education Project. Children can do what they do best – be kids while getting their face painted, eating snow cones, and more!

The Festival runs from 11a.m. to 6pm on Saturday.

Donna Rose to lead the parade on Sunday

The Center is proud to announce the 2008 Grand Marshal will be Donna Rose. Donna Rose has made tremendous contributions to the transgendered community and continues to be an advocate for the GLBT movement. Denver is proud to have her join us in celebration.

Sunday’s activities start with the biggest and most colorful PrideFest tradition, the Parade. Themed floats highlight the Parade, which begins at 9:30 a.m. in Cheesman Park, and travels 14 blocks down Colfax Avenue from Franklin to Broadway.

The parade is followed by an all-day celebration of camaraderie, entertainment, wonderful food, and dozens of vendors at downtown Denver’s beautiful and historic Civic Center Plaza. The Festival runs from 10a.m. to 5p.m. on Sunday, and hosts approximately 250 retail exhibitors, 25 food vendors, and five soft beverage and beer booths.
Entertainment is also provided at the Coors Main Stage and the Community Stage—plus dancing all afternoon at the Stoli Dance World. On Sunday, Martha Wash of the Weather Girls, will be headlining for all to enjoy.

Gov. Ritter makes non-discrimination the law in Colorado

Gov. Bill Ritter moved Colorado to the growing list of states that provide comprehensive protections for the rights of GLBT people in housing, public accommodations and other areas when he signed Senate Bill 200 into law May 29. Equal Rights Colorado, an affiliate of The Center, was instrumental in passage of the bill through non-partisan state legislative advocacy. Our heartfelt thanks to the bill sponsors Sen. Jennifer Veiga and Rep. Joel Judd for standing up and defending what was right in the midst of a vicious and hateful attack from opponents.

This legislative session has been a great success! This bill expands language prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, including transgender status, in housing, public accommodation, eligibility for jury service, availability of family planning services, as well as many other areas.

At ERC’s Annual House Party on May 27, Jessie Shafer received the Michael Brewer Community Advocate Award for his longtime activism and service to the GLBT community. Thank you to Gill Action Fund for pledging up to $10,000 in matching funds for every dollar donated to ERC that evening. Special thanks go to our hosts Sue and Tim Damour, previous board members Theresa Donahue, Nancy Sanders and Peter Gross, and new board members Sheila Barthel, Benjamin Waters, Cypriano Damian, and Jim Burgess.

Please visit our website www.equalrightscolorado.org for more information on SB 200 and to make a donation so that ERC can continue working for your rights.
